It's Been A Great 5 Years
Sep 26, 2018
Yesterday I celebrated my five year anniversary at Autumn Transport. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I started out in the Liquid Tank division training to be a floater. The idea was I would learn dispatch in multiple divisions and then help out with whatever division was busiest or short-handed. However, after just a couple days on the job one of the tanks dispatchers put in his two week notice, and so I became a fulltime Liquid Tanks dispatcher. It was pretty cool to be assigned in Tanks because a few years before I started my father retired from this division (and trucking as a profession). I wish I would have had the chance to dispatch him. Imagine how fun that would have been. Two years into dispatch we had some office reshuffling and I was promoted to the Liquid Tanks Fleet Manager position.
A lot has changed in tanks, and at Autumn Transport in general, since I started. We have had dispatcher turnover, driver turnover and customer turnover. The mix of products we haul and the places we go with our tankers has changed a lot. The introduction of e-logs created a major learning curve for dispatch and drivers a like. I don’t think this kind of change is uncommon in the trucking industry. The old adage is true that in some seasons the only constant is change. And much of this change has been good. We continue to grow as a company and I continue to grow as a leader and as a person. Five years later I am much better than I was, and I wouldn’t trade the ups and downs even if I could. As a mentor of mine says, “we grow the most during times of adversity.” Challenges and changes are often the impetus for introspection and development.
I am proud to work for a company that cares so much for its drivers and office staff. The culture here is second to none. We work hard, we have fun, and we treat everyone with the respect they deserve. I hear from new drivers all the time about how they felt like nothing more than a number at their old company, but how here at Autumn they feel like partners and like part of a family. That is one of the greatest compliments a driver can give us. It’s my goal to know my drivers personally and do everything I can to make them feel successful and cared for. Even if a driver makes a decision to move on, I feel good knowing I did everything I could to make their time here a positive one.
I’ve had a few jobs in my life but I can honestly say that working at Autumn Transport has been one of the very best. I love my team in Liquid Tanks and the drivers who work for us. I’m looking forward to all the future brings!
